William Newton Hospital Unveils State-of-the-Art 128-Slice CT Scanner Following Transformative Anonymous Gifts

Feb 26, 2026

William Newton Hospital is proud to announce the installation of its new Fuji Scenaria View Focus CT scanner, a $675,000 technological upgrade made possible through the profound generosity of an anonymous William Newton Healthcare Foundation donor.

Put into service on February 5, the hospital celebrated the arrival of the equipment on Friday with a "Sugar and Spice, and Twice the Slice!" VIP reception. The event featured tours of the new diagnostic suite, warm apple cider, and slices of pie provided in part by Werner Creek Farm. The new 128-slice scanner replaces a previous 64-slice model that went offline on November 1, 2025. During the interim, the same anonymous donor also funded the cost of a mobile CT unit for $93,000 to ensure uninterrupted patient care, bringing the total gift to $768,000.

“When the CT scanner went down in November, I reached out to a loyal donor,” said Gigi Fergus, MBA, BSN, RN, William Newton Hospital Interim CEO. “They very graciously stepped up to cover the cost of the mobile unit and fully funded this top-of-the-line Fuji. A CT scanner is fundamental to our hospital; without it, we simply cannot provide the essential support our ER, inpatients, and outpatients rely on every day.”

The Fuji Scenaria View Focus represents a significant leap in local diagnostic capabilities. Key features include: Enhanced Resolution & Speed: 128 detectors capture images from all angles simultaneously, resulting in higher resolution and significantly shorter scan times.

  • Patient Comfort & Access: The unit features a larger 80cm aperture and a 660-pound weight limit to accommodate a wider range of patient needs.
  • Radiation Safety: Through lateral table shifting and advanced monitoring, the unit can reduce radiation doses by up to 83%.
  • Pediatric Friendly: A 15-inch touchscreen on the face of the scanner’s circular frame—the 'donut' part of the machine—displays fun shapes and instructions to help put younger patients at ease.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: The system includes new cardiac imaging software and automated 3D reformatting, allowing technologists to provide results to physicians faster than ever before.

Currently, William Newton Hospital performs approximately 600 CT exams per month, with half of those originating from the emergency room or inpatient units. The scanner is vital for diagnosing strokes, traumas, internal bleeding, and cancer.

“We’re happy to be working with our new machine,” said Amanda Gropper, R.T.(R)(CT), Director of Radiology. “It has a lot of new bells and whistles, and we’re just very grateful to this donor.”

William Newton Healthcare Foundation coordinated the gift and the celebratory reception, which was attended by community leaders and dozens of hospital employees.

“This hospital was built on philanthropy when William Newton gave his estate in 1923 to build this hospital,” said Annika Morris, William Newton Healthcare Foundation Executive Director. “Supporters like our incredible CT scanner donor uphold William Newton’s legacy.”

“Critical access hospitals across Kansas, like ours, are doing their best to achieve financial sustainability and navigate the volatile rural healthcare landscape,” Morris continued. “Philanthropy is the cherry on top to enhance the delivery of rural care.”
