William Newton Hospital Recognizes Butters, Welcomes Sawyer

Aug 16, 2021

During May’s meeting, William Newton Hospital administrators honored Brenda Butters for her years of service as a member of the board of trustees. Butters completed two terms in June.

“I’ve worked with several boards throughout my career in healthcare,” noted William Newton Hospital CEO Ben Quinton. “I have never had a group of trustees as engaged and committed as the one at William Newton Hospital. It’s people like Brenda Butters who have furthered our mission to meet the ever-changing healthcare needs of our community. We are grateful for her 10 years of service.”

The five-member volunteer board of trustees at William Newton Hospital is appointed by the Winfield City Commission for five-year terms. Members are selected based on the skills and good judgment that have made them successful in their own professions, as well as a record of community service.

Butters was appointed in 2011 and served as chair in 2014. She was reappointed in 2016. During her tenure, she was also a loyal William Newton Healthcare Foundation supporter, helping out with events such as the Wine-O Trail Run and serving on committees such as the Gala Planning Committee. Butters is currently an Assistant Vice President at Union State Bank.

Gail Sawyer started her appointment as a William Newton Hospital trustee in July. Sawyer, who has a long career in healthcare, moved to Winfield in 1988. She started working at Winfield Medical Arts and filled in at the Snyder Clinic.sawyer

She also worked at William Newton Hospital as the director of radiology for nearly five years. When Sunflower OB-Gyn opened at the Physicians Pavilion, she transitioned to the clinic. For the last five years, she has worked alongside her husband, Dr. Stan Sawyer, at his local dental office. As a dedicated community member, Sawyer has also served on the USD 465 school board for over eight years and has supported William Newton Healthcare Foundation’s Second Century Campaign to expand facilities.

"I believe access to healthcare is the backbone of our community and understand the importance of a local hospital," said Sawyer.

Quinton said Sawyer is a good match for her new role, “We are thrilled with Gail Sawyer’s appointment. Not only does she have firsthand knowledge of the hospital through her leadership in radiology, but her experience working in multiple clinics across Winfield will be invaluable.”
