Hospital Veteran Recognition Program Launches Veterans Day

Nov 08, 2019

When William Newton Hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer Laura Frazier, BSN, RN-BC, joined the hospital leadership team in August, a veteran recognition program was a meaningful project she wanted to implement straight away.

“This effort helps us better recognize and thank the veterans in our community who choose to receive care at WNH,” said Frazier.

Starting Monday, November 11, Veterans Day, the hospital is implementing a phased program beginning with a patient wristband, door magnet, and chart sticker.

Every patient will be asked two questions upon registration: “Are you a veteran?” and “Would you like to be recognized?” William Newton Hospital encourages veterans to self-identify.

If the patient agrees to be recognized, an American flag wristband will be placed on their wrist. If the patient is admitted to a unit in the hospital, an American flag magnet will be placed on the door frame outside of their room. A flag sticker will also be placed on the spine of their medical chart.

According to Frazier, the modest, yet visible flags will assist staff and volunteers in the quick recognition of veterans. “It is our goal to always treat veterans with courtesy and respect and create an environment of peace and quiet.”

Staff and volunteers are encouraged to thank veterans for their service during their hospital stay.

The hospital plans to continue enhancing this new program. For more information, contact William Newton Hospital at 620-221-2300.
