William Newton Hospital Welcomes Trustee Gatton

Jun 16, 2026

At May’s meeting, William Newton Hospital Board Chair Gary Brewer announced Bonnie Gatton’s appointment to the board of trustees. Gatton's term officially began on June 1.

"We are thrilled to welcome Bonnie Gatton to the WNH board of trustees," says hospital Interim CEO Gigi Fergus, MBA, BSN, RN. "Her extensive background in nursing, long-term care, and healthcare education will bring a valuable clinical perspective to our board as we navigate the evolving healthcare landscape. We look forward to her contributions and insights."

The five-member volunteer board of trustees at William Newton Hospital is appointed by the Winfield City Commission for five-year terms. Members are selected based on the skills and good judgment that have made them successful in their own professions, as well as a record of community service.

"Thank you again for the opportunity to bring my knowledge base to William Newton Hospital, to learn more about the facility, and to give back to the community we love," shares Gatton. "Having worked in healthcare for four decades, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the board to ensure high-quality care for our region."

Gatton graduated from the Macqueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing in Easton, Maryland, in 1972, and began her nursing career in pediatrics before transitioning to geriatrics in 1973. She dedicated the remainder of her 40-year career to long-term care until her retirement in 2012.

In 1992, she became an American Nurses Association Certified Geriatric Nurse, which opened doors for her to teach at Chesapeake College, educating future certified nursing assistants, geriatric nursing assistants, and training professionals in long-term care medication management.

Although a long-time resident of the East Coast, Gatton's connection to South Central Kansas spans over 50 years. In 1973, she married her husband, Ron Gatton, who grew up in Burden, Kansas. After decades of yearly family visits, the couple chose Winfield for their retirement, purchasing a home and becoming permanent residents in 2010.
