Color Me Healthy: Calendar Project Combines Art, Health

Aug 26, 2019

****William Newton Healthcare Foundation and Winfield Arts and Humanities Council recently announced the winners of the fourth annual Putting the heART Back into Healthcare design contest.

During the spring semester, 860 participants from daycare to sixth grade put their creativity to the test by submitting an illustration of a healthy family or community.

The winning designs, selected based on artistic merit, imagination, and perception of a healthy community, are being sold as a 16-month calendar for just $25. Artwork by 12 local children is featured along with four blank months for creating more health-inspired art.

The groups also coordinated with Winfield USD 465 to publish important dates, including a reminder for the new late-start days.

William Newton Healthcare Foundation Director Annika Morris discussed how the project came together.

“This collaboration amongst all entities has been very fun,” says Morris. “We also appreciate working with the schools in our area. The children are our future. It is not only wonderful for them think about what healthy looks like, but to also celebrate what they’re already doing to keep our community healthy and vital.”

For the second year, Healthways of William Newton Hospital has included healthy recipes, family activities, and safety tips complementing the art selected for the month.

Ruth Bumgarner, Healthways coordinator, shared an example.

“The month of December has a list of indoor games and free online activities to help families stay active during wintery weather,” Bumgarner explains. “’The Ground is Lava’ is a favorite in the Bumgarner household.”

Creators of the winning designs were Eberly Beaver, 5th grade Irving Elementary; Olivia Brodbeck, 2nd grade Irving Elementary; Aria Burroughs, Kindergarten Whittier Elementary; Emma Calderon, 3rd grade Whittier Elementary; Lillian Floyd, 3rd grade Lowell Elementary; Ava Lewis, 2nd grade Whittier Elementary; Baylee McDermott, 3rd grade Whittier Elementary; Hadley McClure, Sunshine Daycare; Logan Miers, Pre-K SC Learning Center; Frank Morris, Deborah Keely Daycare; Kayden Tarver, 5th grade Trinity Lutheran School; and Ava Torrance, 5th grade Lowell Elementary.

Calendars are available for sale at the William Newton Hospital snack bar/gift shop and Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. Proceeds benefit William Newton Healthcare Foundation scholarships, Winfield Arts and Humanities Council summer scholarships, and William Newton Hospital Healthways programs.

An award ceremony will take place at the annual Winfield Art in the Park event scheduled for Saturday, October 5 at Island Park. Winners will receive an original framed print of their art. The calendars can be purchased on site.
