Bass N' Dash Reels in Funds for Healthcare

Jun 22, 2026

The 3rd annual Bass N' Dash event at Winfield City Lake on May 30 reeled in over $3,000 to benefit the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and Huxley’s Halo of Hope. Co-hosted by Winfield City Lake, the event transitioned this year to include a brand-new running component, drawing 24 anglers, 15 kids, and 32 runners for a beautiful day of outdoor recreation and community support.

"Luck was on our side this year," noted William Newton Hospital Director of Volunteers Brittney Shaffer. "We had an incredible day on the trails and water—the storm system that dumped heavy rain in Winfield grazed just south of the lake!"

In its third year, the event successfully expanded its impact. The funds raised will contribute directly to supporting quality healthcare in the community, including the Auxiliary’s ongoing philanthropic pledges to the hospital. Proceeds will also benefit Huxley’s Halo of Hope, an initiative dedicated to providing light, comfort, and tangible keepsakes—such as weighted bears and gift baskets—to families navigating the profound loss of a baby.

"This event continues to evolve, and we are thrilled to welcome runners into the mix this year alongside our anglers," said Shaffer. "We thank each of our participants, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors for their vital contributions to our community hospital and healthcare initiatives."

The adult fishing tournament saw highly competitive weigh-ins. Taking first place, weighing in at an impressive 12 lbs. 4 oz. and earning a $500 payout, were Koal Meier and Timber Neal. Craig Thompson and Bryce Lane took home second place and a $300 payout. The Biggest Catch pot of $132 went to Justin Hogan and Jacob Behrhorst with a single catch weighing in at 6 lbs.

On the trails, the inaugural 5K Trail Run saw fantastic participation. Talon Suttles was the overall winner. Hattie Smith secured first place in the female division, and Trevor Smith won first place in the male division. Michael Nuss took home the trophy for the 10 & under category.

The Kids' Fishing Derby also brought plenty of excitement to the shoreline. Charlotte Macklin won first place with a total weight of 3 lbs. 6 oz. Beckett McNown placed second, and Erica McNown placed third.

Organizers extend a special thank you to this year's generous sponsors, who made the day possible: South Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad (SKOL), Jonathan Leeper - American Family Insurance Agent, The Cooler, CB Ranch LLC, Gold Nutrition Winfield, and Third Nail Media.
