Bass N’ BBQ Reels in Funds for Hospital

Jul 10, 2023

June’s Bass N' BBQ bass fishing tournament, barbeque competition, and kids' fishing derby raised $1,700 for William Newton Hospital. Hosted by Winfield City Lake, the William Newton Healthcare Foundation’s inaugural event registered 15 boats, or 30 anglers, four barbeque teams, and 11 kids.

“Although challenges with water levels necessitated a date change, we’re thrilled to turn a profit in our first year. These funds will benefit Phase Two of our capital campaign, which is dedicated to the expansion of William Newton Hospital’s emergency department,” noted Bass N’ BBQ chairperson Brittney Shaffer, William Newton Healthcare Foundation administrative assistant. “This event can only get bigger and better! We thank each of the participants, sponsors, vendors, prize donors, volunteers, and particularly our host Winfield City Lake for your contributions to your community hospital.”

Taking first place in the fishing tournament and earning a $500 payout was Koal Meier with three bass weighing in at 13.8 pounds.

Dustan Staten took the top spot in the barbeque competition with his brisket and earned a payout of $500.

Though none of the kids in the derby caught a fish, they each took home a commemorative t-shirt. Several children won prizes including fishing poles and water soakers.

For just $5, lake goers and Bass N’ BBQ participants all enjoyed the barbeque tasting, which featured samples from the competition including brisket, chicken, ribs, venison, pulled pork, and coleslaw.

In partnership with Winfield City Lake, the foundation plans on hosting the event again in 2024 on the first Saturday in May.
