William Newton Hospital Auxiliary’s Bass N' BBQ bass fishing tournament and kids' fishing derby held on May 10 and co-hosted by Winfield City Lake raised nearly $1,700 for William Newton Hospital. In the second year of the event, 24 anglers and 12 kids enjoyed a day of outdoor recreation.
“Over half the teams that entered weighed in fish this year, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. We’re thrilled to turn a profit again to benefit WNH,” noted Bass N’ BBQ chairperson Brittney Shaffer, William Newton Hospital Auxiliary director.
The funds raised will contribute to the auxiliary’s pledge of $350,000 for Phase 2 of the Second Century Campaign.
“This event can only get bigger and better, and we plan on doing it annually. We thank each of the participants, sponsors, vendors, prize donors, volunteers, and particularly our host Winfield City Lake, for your contributions to your community hospital,” said Shaffer.
Taking first place in the fishing tournament, weighing in at 7 lbs. 6 oz., and earning a $500 payout plus half of the biggest catch pot were Jahsiel Calzada and Jake Dalzell.
Several kids fishing in the fishing derby weighed in fish this year, with Charlotte Macklin taking first place. Prizes were awarded, including fishing poles, water soakers, and gift cards.
Following the tournament, participants enjoyed a BBQ lunch included with registration.
Event organizers plan on hosting the event again in 2026 on the second Saturday in May.
