Hospital Honors Volunteers

On April 19, William Newton Hospital celebrated the service of its volunteers with a luncheon at the Physicians Pavilion.  At the event, the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary named Joan Bair its 2017 Volunteer of the Year. volunteer awards bair

Bair has been an auxilian since February of 2016. Cheryl Brock, William Newton Hospital Director of Volunteer Services, described her deep commitment to the organization.

“Joan is very deserving of this award,” said Brock. “She has gone the extra mile in assisting with the holiday market, helping order and set up display items in the Gift Shop, and serving on special projects."

Brock stated Bair is an active member on the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary board and serves as an in-house volunteer at the snack bar/gift shop. Brock touted Bair’s amazing ability to recruit new members to hospital volunteer team, citing at least five including auxiliary President Georgia Larson.

Service pins were awarded to volunteers to recognize cumulative hours of service completed. Individuals received awards starting at 100 hours to 13,000 hours, completed by Doris Reynolds. A total of 11,201 hours were donated in 2017.

Reynolds’ hours began in March 1992 when she joined the volunteer service department. According to Reynolds, the director of volunteers at that time was Barbara Spainhour.

“Not too many people have ever reached this amazing mark in service hours,” said Brock. “WNH is lucky to have Doris on the team.”

Ben Quinton, William Newton Hospital Chief Executive Officer, spoke to the importance of volunteers to the hospital.

“While the monetary benefits are awesome – the value really stems from the caring and kindness they provide to William Newton Hospital patients, visitors and staff,” said Quinton.

William Newton Hospital is fortunate to have 50 in-house volunteers that work in a variety of positions around the hospital including surgery waiting room, front desk, snack bar/gift Shop, Winfield Healthcare Center, and specialty clinics.  The William Newton Hospital Auxiliary has an additional 77 members who volunteer and participate in special projects held throughout the year including the holiday market, potato bar fundraiser, raffle fundraiser, and more.
