REHABILITATION SERVICES

 

Physical Therapy

William Newton Hospital has seven physical therapists.  We also have a certified physical therapist assistant.  As a group we provide acute, skilled and outpatient services in addition to consulting services and home health.  Our therapists see patients who are referred from our local physicians and from other physicians and specialists outside the Winfield area.

We provide a full array of services to patients including:

  • Neurological and stroke rehabilitation
  • Pediatric rehabilitation, including treatment for children with special needs such as cerebral palsy, sensory deficit, Down syndrome, and other development delay disorders
  • Vestibular evaluation and treatment
  • Post trauma including fractures and sports medicine injuries
  • Post amputation, prosthetic rehabilitation and orthotic care/management
  • Acute and chronic pain management and treatments including a wide variety of modalities and manual therapy
  • Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization such as Graston Technique
  • Development of specialized home programs for muscle weakness and imbalances
  • Proper use of assistive devices such as walkers, canes and crutches, and gait training
  • Care giver education

Occupational Therapy and Orthotic Fabrication

William Newton Hospital has a registered occupational therapist and a certified occupational therapy assistant on staff.  We provide training for patients to allow them to dress, feed and care for themselves.  We also provide information for getting any specialized equipment and coping strategies for individuals such as low vision, energy conservation and poor memory, etc.  We see patients who are referred from our local physicians and from other physicians and specialists outside the Winfield area.

We provide a wide range of services to the patient including:

  • Neurological and stroke rehabilitation
  • Post trauma and fracture care
  • Post-surgical repairs of the upper extremity
  • Scar tissue massage and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization-Graston Technique
  • Activities of Daily Living(ADL) and equipment training
  • Splint fabrication and patient teaching
  • Modalities for pain control and edema reduction and tissue extensibility
  • Specialized seating and wheelchair prescription and recommendation
  • Work site analysis
  • Consulting

Speech Therapy

William Newton Hospital offers speech-language pathology services to evaluate and treat a wide variety of patients including: cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and in general patients who have any difficulty with speech, including pediatric individuals. Our Speech-language Pathologist is certified in Lee Silverman Voice Treatment for Parkinson’s.  We also perform modified barium swallow studies in conjunction with diagnostic imaging.  We see patients who are referred from our local physicians and from other physicians and specialists outside the Winfield area.

  • Articulation or errors with speech sounds
  • Language - this may be expressive or receptive speech.  It can affect reading and writing
  • Voice – problems with pitch, volume or quality
  • Fluency -  includes stuttering and cluttering
  • Swallowing problems that can arise after a head injury, a stroke, or babies born prematurely
  • Cognitive disorders including confusion and memory problems that often result from a stroke or a head injury

Speech-language Pathologists may be helpful with breath control problems, and aural rehabilitation (for hearing loss).
